Lesson Synopsis of 12/9/12

Relief Society, Dec. 9, 2012

Kindness is how a Christlike person treats others:

Kindness is a spirit of kindness not harshness

We can control our tongues.  What we say cannot be taken back.

We must look for the good in someone.

Giving honest praise and compliments helps others feel successful.  We tend to live up to expectations  others have of us.

A wonderful primary song "I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus" helps children learn the necessity of kindness.

Keeping Christ in Christmas

As we enter the holiday season let us remember to keep the Savior in the Christmas message.  Although "X-Mas" is popular, it eliminates the reason for our celebration.

Let us teach our children what we truely believe about Christmas.
Cards could be selected that do not emphasize Santa.

Shown in the lesson was a Christmas tree with the following explanations:

Green: hope grows heavenward
Star:  Jesus was born.  The Promise was fullfilled and a star shown brightly to announce His birth.
Red ball ornaments: Theblood of Christ was shed for us
Bells:  Angels sang, and shephards were coming to worship Him
Candy canes:  The shape "J" stands for Jesus
Wreath:  The circle represents eternal life

Remember - keep Christ in Christmas!

Presidency Message:  How Can I Become A More Effective Visiting Teacher?

Jesus Christ blessed individuals during his ministry.  Prophets throughout the history of the Church have expounded on the obligation saints have to serve others and told of the blessings all receive from that service.  As Relief Society sisters visit those they have been called to serve they should:  a) speak words of comfort and peace, b) carry the spirit of love into their homes, c) pray for them, d) be their friend.

As we come to know those we serve we can learn of their needs.  Those may include temporal, health, emotional, spiritual, and strengthen their testimony.  We have the opportunity to rescue in any way needed - pitch in!

Every sister has the opportunity to be a visiting teacher and have a responsibility to know and care about their sisters.  Those we visit should feel comfortable enough to ask for assistance.  Caring/loving visiting teachers can help those who are inactive return to the fold.

Reporting your visiting teaching during the month is important for the Relief Society president and the bishop to know where needs are.  Call your supervisor.  Do not wait for her to call you.

The bishop cannot take care of everyone individually.  Visiting teaching is a stewardship.

Visiting teaching blesses us and blesses our ward!

The Vision of Prophets regarding Relief Society:  Faith, Family, Relief
by Julie B. Beck, recently released Relief Society General President

The Prophet Joseph Smith established Relief Society; he directed its first president to preside in taking care of the poor, administering to their wants, and attending to the various affairs of the institution.  He believed the organization should be a select society, separate from all the evils of the world.  As social beliefs change we can be assured that the values of Relief Society will remain unchanged.

President Joseph F.Smith said:  "You are members of the greatest women's organization in the world, an organization which is a vital part of the kingdom of God on [the} earth and which is so designed and operated that it helps its faithful members to gain eternal life in our Father's kingdom."

Relief Society is not a program.  It is an official part of the Lord's church that is divinely ordained of God to teach, strengthen, and inspire sisters in their purpose regarding faith, family and relief.  Relief Society teaches self sufficiency and efficiency, strenthens faith, provides service and support to others, and helps educate sisters.

In Daughters in My Kingdom, we read:  "As sisters articulate their beliefs by word and deed, they can strengthen each other's faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.  They can help each other prepare to receive all the blessings available in Heavenly Father's plan of happiness.

Relief Society includes doing everything possible to become spiritually and temporally self-reliant.  Present Gordon B. Hinckley said, "I am convinced there is no other organization anywhere to match the Relief Society of this Church."

Temporal and Spiritual Blessings from the Word of Wisdom
from the life of George Albert Smith

Obedience to the Word of Wisdom brings not only physical health but spiritual blessings as well.  In the book of Daniel, we learn because of his obedience to the Lord's law of health in his day, not only was his life preserved, but Daniel also received a great spiritual blessing: "the inspiration of the Almighty."

The Word of Wisdom is loving counsel from our Father, who knows all things.  We are given the counsel "not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation for the temporal salvation of all saints in tthe last days."  It was "Given for a principle with promise...for the weakest among us."

Heavenly Father said, "My son, these things are not good for you, and if you will avoid them I will give ou the companionship of my Holy Spirit and joy while you live in the world and in the end eternal life."

President Smith believed the Word of Wisdom was given to us not just to increase our health, "but that our faith might be strengthened, that our testimony of the divinity of the mission of our Lord and Master might be increased, that thereby we might be better prepared to return to His presence when our labor here is complete."  He rewards those who serve Him.  "He has given certain rules and regulations to govern us in this life, and obedience to His requirements insures us His pleasure, and the blessings promised will follow.  If we violate the will of the Lord, our faith will wane, for the Spirit will not always strive with us.  Observance of the Word of Wisdom will increase our faith and greater knowldege will be ours as a result.

By obeying the Word of Wisdom, we prepare for eternal life.  By taking forbidden things into our bodies, we defile the temple of the spirit.  When we "give way to weakness of the flesh, we deprive ourselves of opportunities that await us in the future, and cut ourselves off from the blessings that the Lord hath in store for the faithful."

The best way to teach our families to obey the Word of Wisdom is to obey it ourselves.  Read the Word of Wisdom in the presence of your families and set the example.

Forget Me Not,  by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

President Uchtdorf likened the petals of the forget-me-not flower to five things we should remember.

1) Forget not to be patient with yourself.
We do not have to be perfect
Different phases in our life allow us to accomplish things deemed important.  Doing more requires time.

2) Forget not the difference between a good sacrifice and a foolish sacrifice.
Commit time and energy to do those things that matter most.

3) Forget not to be happy now.
"Recognize what is important and live for that."
Discover the beauty and sweetness of everyday moments.

4) Forget not the why of the gospel.

5)  Forget not that Heavenly Father loves you.
We are His children.  He loves us.

HOW TO OBTAIN REVELATION AND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR PERSONAL LIFE
May 2012 Ensign, by Elder Richard G. Scott

Portions of the talk are included in this weeks blog.

Why does the Lord want us to pray to Him and to ask?  Because that is how revelation is received.  The Holy Ghost communicates information we need to guide us in our mortal journey.  When it is crisp and clear and essential, it warrants the title of revelation.  When it is a series of promptings to guide us step by step to a worthy objective, for the purpose of this message, it is inspiration.

President Spencer W. Kimball after long and continued supplication to the Lord regarding the priesthood to all worthy men in the Church, received a revelation that the time had arrived for all to be included.  President Joseph F. Smith said, "I believe we move and have our being in the presence of heavenly messengers and of heavenly beings."  Relationships can be strengthened through the veil with people we know and love.  That is done by our determined effort to continually do what is right.

One of the great lessons that each of us needs to learn is to ask.  Yielding to emotions such as anger or hurt or defensiveness will drive away the Holy Ghost.  Loud, inappropriate laughter will offend the Spirit.  Another enemy to revelation comes from exaggeration or loudness in what is stated.  Spiritual communication can be enhanced by good health practices (exercise, adequate sleep, good eating habits).  We will live for our appointed life span.  However, we can improve both the quality of service and our well-being by making careful, appropriate choices.

Revelation can also be given in a dream when there is an almost imperceptible transition from sleep to wakefulness.  In a dream He may make revelation both easier to understand and more likely to touch our hearts by teaching us through someone we love and respect.  Inspiration carefully recorded shows God that His communications are sacred to us.  Such recording of direction of the Spirit should be protected from loss or intrusion by others.  We can be taught from on high by keeping the commandments.

One must be mentally and physically clean and have purity of intent so that the Lord can inspire.  For spirituality to grow stronger and more available, it must be planted in a righteous environment.  Humility is a fertile soil where spirituality grows and produces inspiration to know what to do.  In the process of helping others, the Lord can piggyback directions for our own benefit.

Two indicators that a feeling or prompting comes from God are that it produces peace in your heart and a quiet, warm feeling.  The more closely you follow divine guidance, the greater will be your happiness here and for eternity - moreover, the more abundant your progress and capacity to serve.  The disposition to do right brings peace of mind and happiness.  Should choices be wrong, they can be rectified through repentance.

Communication with our Father in Heaven is not a trivial matter.  It is a sacred privilege.  It is based upon eternal, unchanging principles.  We receive help from our Father in Heaven in response to our faith, obedience, and the proper use of agency.

Teachings of Presidents of the Church: George Albert Smith
Chapter 15, pg. 157

ADVANCING THE WORK OF THE LORD

Church membership has grown from six members to over 14 million.  President George Albert Smith believed new technologies would further the Lord's work with aviation allowing travel assignments to be more easily fulfilled, and radio and television allowing a greater audience to hear God's word.  Today we have satellites making dissemination of church news, messages, and conferences  available worldwide.  President Smith believed these inventions were blessings from the Lord if used in righteousness.

There is ample opportunity for every member to participate in the work of the Lord.  It is the responsibility of each church member to promote the work of the Lord.  President Smith said, "I must carry that part of the load that the Lord places upon me, and if I shirk, then I realize that I forfeit the blessing that would come to me by obedience to the commandments of our Father.  It is a slothful servant who waits until he is commanded in all things." (D&C 58: 26, 27).  Many who hold positions in the Church believe that once they carry out their special obligation, their work is done.  We are expected to conduct ourselves each day as Latter-day Saints in the broadest meaning and act as servants of the Lord in every deed.  Those who fail to keep covenants lose the Spirit of the Lord, and then begin to wonder what will become of Zion.  "Whenever you are doing your full duty, you will know, as you know that you live, that it is our Father's work, and that he will bring it off triumphant."

Opposition will not stop the progress of the Church because it is the work of God, not of man.  The Church has had much opposition, but it continues to gather choice spirits who have lived in such a way that they could comprehend the truth.  This is God's work.  Heavenly Father is ready to pour out His blessings on us today.

God adjusts conditions in the world so that His work can spread throughout the earth.  the message of the latter days shall be heard.  By the power of His might He will level the conditions of this world and humble the children of men until they are repentant and willing to listen to the truths that He requires us to teach in the world.  Zion will rise and shine, and will become the glory of the whole earth, the Lord God of Israel has so decreed.

Chapter 10, Teachings of the Presidents of the Church, President George Albert Smith

THE SCRIPTURES, THE MOST VALUABLE LIBRARY IN THE WORLD

President Smith recalled how early in his life a specific scripture made an impact that endured throughout his life.  He hoped others would also have scriptures that were joyful, filled with purpose and meaning, and bring them comfort.  Realizing the importance of studying the scriptures, he wanted to impress on the saints the need for daily scripture study in order to have those meaningful experiences and to build their testimonies.  The scriptures let us know that Heavenly Father is aware of us as individuals.  He knows our struggles.

"The truths contained in the scriptures are far more valuable than the philosophies of men."  President Smith acknowledged the great libraries of the world contained millions of volumes - "and yet, all that God has revealed and published to the children of men that is necessary to prepare them for a place in the celestial kingdom is contained within the covers of these (holy scriptures) sacred books."  He counseled that all of the philosophies of men throughout the ages do not contain the wisdom of the scriptures.  The scriptures contain the wisdom of prophets.

The scriptures were given to us to help us overcome trials and help us prepare for exaltation and the celestial kingdom.  We have been given instruction to help us "adjust our lives and to prepare ourselves that no matter what may transpire we will be on the Lord's side of the line."  "Our Heavenly Father, through His faithful representatives, has told us of the important things that should occur and we can read about them in His holy scriptures.  If we really desire to be saved and exalted in His celestial kingdom He has told us how to proceed."

Faith in our families can be increased by reading the scriptures together.  President Smith stated, "I admonish you, O Israel, search the scriptures; read them in your homes; teach your families what the Lord has said, and let us spend less of our time reading the unimportant and often harmful literature of the day, and go to the fountain of truth and read the word of the Lord."  Read the scriptures; learn from them, and live their teachings.

LOVE AND APPRECIATION FOR THE TEMPLE

Our presence in the temple gives us a feeling of peace.  Those who have attended the temple, or plan to attend, may often have one that is considered as "their" temple.  Experiences surrounding one may cause us to believe it is special thus giving a feeling that a particular temple is where we want to be sealed for time and eternity.

Every temple is special because the Holy Ghost is present within.  They are beautiful.  The Mesa Temple was dedicated in 1927.  It is rumored that when renovations were later planned it was learned a place for an elevator was already present.  That knowledge was not previously known and it was a great relief to those whose task was to install one.

Temple ordinances and sealings are the reason for the church and the foundation of the eternal family.  In the October 1984 general conference, President Howard W. Hunter gave an inspired talk on temple attendance and worthiness.  We need to make temple attendance a priority in our lives.  We need to be a temple attending people.

Teachings of Presidents of the Church, George Albert Smith, Chapter 8

Temple Blessings for Ourselves and Our Ancestors

The purpose of temples is to provide a place where holy ordinances are performed for the living and for the dead.  In 1905, as a new Apostle, George Albert Smith toured several Church history sites with President Joseph F. Smith and other members of the Quorum of the Twelve.  They visited the Kirtland, Ohio temple.  He said, "When we realized that the building was constructed by people in extreme poverty, how courageous men worked during the day to lay the foundations and build the walls of that structure, and then as night stood and defended it with weapons against those who had sworn that the building should never be completed, we could not help but feel that it was no wonder the Lord received their offerings and blessed them as few people have been blest upon the earth."

While dedicating the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple, he said, "We thank thee, O God, for sending Elijah the ancient prophet, to whom was committed the keys of the power of turning the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to the fathers, that the whole earth may not be smitten with a curse.  We thank thee that he was sent to thy servant, Joseph Smith, to confer the keys and authority of the work for the dead, and to reveal that the plan of salvation embraces the whole of the human family, that the gospel is universal in scope, and that thou art no respecter of persons, having provided for the preaching of the gospel of salvation to both the living and the dead.  We are most grateful unto thee that salvation is provided for all who desire to be saved in thy kingdom.  May it be pleasing to thy people to search out the genealogy of their forebears that they may become saviors on Mt. Zion by officiating in thy temples for their kindred dead.  We pray also that the spirit of Elijah may  rest mightily upon all peoples everywhere that they may be moved upon to gather and make available the genealogy of their ancestors; and that thy faithful children may utilize thy holy temples in which to perform on behalf of the dead all ordinances pertaining to their eternal exaltation."

In the temple we receive sacred ordinances, including ordinances that bind families for eternity.  There are only a few places in the world where we can be married for eternity, and that is in the temples of God.  In the temples we make eternal blessings available to our deceased ancestors, and the Lord will assist us in searching for our kindred dead.

Ways we are able to teach our children about the temple include going to the visitors' center and temple grounds, displaying temple pictures in our homes, working on our family history, and having them perform temple baptisms when they are of age.

It is our privilege and blessing to attend the temple and perform ordinances for our kindred dead.

Ward Conference

Lesson taught by Relief Society Stake Presidency

Arise and Shine Forth:

Objective:  We can learn to be examples of Christ in our home, church and community as we arise and shine forth!  A theme poster can be obtained at : slcgreer@yahoo.com

D&C 115:5, Verily I say unto you, arise and shine forth that thy light may be a standard for the nations.  We must: set an example, stay true to our beliefs, let our light shine forth (be happy), be a missionary, and be a standard bearer.

How Can I Arise and Shine Forth?

1) In my community?  If we believe we can do all things through Christ, we can work miracles.  Alma 26:12.  We can invite one person to join us in a service activity.

2) In my church participation and calling?  Visiting teaching is an ongoing assignment.  Do sisters feel the light of Christ after our visit?

3) In my home?  We can develop attributes of Christ.  With Christ anything is possible.

Those attributes include: FAITH, HOPE, CHARITY AND LOVE, VIRTUE, KNOWLEDGE, PATIENCE, HUMILITY, DILIGENCE, AND OBEDIENCE.

Recipes from Birthday Dinner

Here are the recipes we used for our Cafe Rio inspired dinner at the Relief Society birthday dinner.

Creamy Tomatillo Dressing
1 pkg. Traditional Ranch dressing powder mix (not Buttermilk dressing)
1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup buttermilk
2 tomatillos, remove husk and quarter or dice
1/2 bunch of fresh cilantro
1 clove garlic (I use more)
juice of 1 lime
1 jalapeno (with our without the seeds)

Mix everything in a blender. Easy!

Cafe Rio Pork
1 Tbsp cumin
1 cup brown sugar
1 can Coke
1 cup enchilada sauce

Pour over pork roast and cook in crockpot 4-6 hrs on High. Shred with fork and cook for another hour. (I like to drain the fat from the sauce and thicken it slightly with cornstarch.)

Black Beans
2 Tbsp. olive oil
2 cloves minced garlic
1 tsp. ground cumin
3 cans black beans, rinsed and drained
1 1/3 cup tomato juice (I sometimes use tomato sauce diluted w/ water)
1 1/2 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp fresh chopped cilantro

In non-stick skillet, cook garlic and cumin in olive oil over medium heat until you can smell it. Add everything else except cilantro. Stir continually until heated through. Stir in cilantro just before serving. (We sometimes add a can of corn too...YUM!)

Cilantro Lime Rice
2 cups uncooked long grain rice (not minute rice)
1 tsp. butter or margarine
2 cloves minced garlic
1 tsp. lime juice
1 15oz can chicken broth
2 cups water (maybe more)
1 Tbsp. lime juice
2 tsp sugar
3 Tbsp fresh chopped cilantro (I use more!)

In a saucepan combine rice, butter and garlic. Saute together for a minute. Add 1 tsp. lime, broth and water. Bring to a boil. Cover and cook on low 15-20 mins, until rice is tender. Remove from heat. In a small bowl combine lime juice, sugar and cilantro. Pour over hot cooked rice an mix in as you fluff the rice.

It is important that we have a reverent attitude in every sacrament meeting.  We should be the happiest, most thankful people on earth.  We have the gospel, temples, families, the priesthood, and the blessings they offer; therefore, we should be the most reverent.

During sacrament meeting our thoughts should include our Savior and the work of missionaries.  Arriving ten minutes early allows us to ponder and think about reverence prior to taking the sacrament.  The foyer is the place for visiting.

Reverence is expressed differently at different ages.  Our young people show reverence outwardly by folding their arms, speaking and walking quietly.  As we grow reverence is experienced inwardly.

Reverence is a profound respect and love for Heavenly Father and our Savior.  Reverent behavior follows the attitude.  As reverent attitudes increase, we can be more receptive to spiritual promptings.

Our homes may also become a place where reverence is felt.  Music, pictures, thoughts and speech can be peaceful.  It may not be easy, but it is possible.

Lesson Synopsis of 2/26/12

Relief Society, February 26, 2012

STAND IN HOLY PLACES, by President Thomas S. Monson, Nov. 2011 Ensign

"Communication with our Father in Heaven - including our prayers to Him and His inspiration to us - is necessary in order for us to weather the storms and trials of life."

We have seen many changes since the 1960's.  Some positive changes listed were: typewriters were replaced by word processors, microwaves, phone services, internet, digital cameras; and negative changes listed included abortion, television content, language, violence, immodesty, lack of respect, music content, and pornography.

The one consistent element of our lives is the gospel of Jesus Christ.  The ten commandments are not the ten "suggestions."  Do we adhere to them?
1) Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2) Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
3) Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
4) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
5) Honor thy father and thy mother.
6) Thou shalt not kill.
7) Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8) Thou shalt not steal.
9) Thou shalt not bear false witness.
10) Thou shalt not covet.

Our code of conduct is definitive; it is not negotiable.  Our Father in Heaven is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  There is nothing which can bring more joy into our lives or more peace to our  soul than the Spirit which can come to us as we follow the Savior and keep the commandments.

Lesson:  Chapter Three, Daughters in My Kingdom

CLEAVE UNTO THE COVENANTS, Exodus, Migration, and Settlement

Following the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smithin 1844, and due to continued persecution of Church members, President Brigham Young counseled the Saints to leave Nauvoo, Illinois for a new home where they hoped to live and worship in peace.  The exodus began in February 1846.  More than 5,000 people thronged the Nauvoo Temple after it s dedication, so they could receive the endowment and the sealing ordinance before embarking on their journey into an unknown future.  They came to the temple all day and long into the night until each person had received their ordinances.  The strength, power, and blessings of temple covenants would sustain them during their journey, when they would suffer cold, heat, hunger, poverty, sickness, accidents, and death.  They were spiritually prepared when they left Nauvoo.  President Brigham Young made the following declaration to the Saints:  "This shall be our covenant - that we will walk in all the ordinances of the
Lord."  They were bound by covenant to God, their families, and their fellow sojourners.

We each make a covenant at baptism to serve Him and keep His commandments (Mosiah 18:1-10).  During the temple endowment we make additional covenants.  During their journey west, women found spiritual strength in each other"s love and compassion.  Throughout the journey, as they suffered trials of illness and death they prayed in faith for each other and comforted each other.  "The love of God flowed from heart to heart till the wicked one seemed powerless in his efforts to get between us and the Lord, and his cruel darts, in some instances, were shorn of their sting."

Covenants keep us focused, help us have the Holy Ghost present, guide our choices, give strength to carry on, to persevere, bless us with new callings which provide personal growth, give us a new perspective, help sustain our faith, allow us to recognize the power of the Lord manifested daily, and provide a protection from the power of Satan.  Keeping covenants help us strengthen others, bare every trial, and endure every challenge.

Lesson Synopsis of 1/8/12

Relief Society, January 8, 2012

This year we will study from "Teachings of Presidents of the Church," and learn about President George Albert Smith.  Studying each prophet helps us know them as an individual in addition to knowing them as a prophet of God.

Chapter One, LIVING WHAT WE BELIEVE

President George Albert Smith was born on April 4, 1870, to a family with a lengthy history of Church membership.  He was born in humbly surroundings.  The family home was modest, and he often felt when winds blew the two-story structure would blow down.

He married Lucy Emily Woodruff (granddaughter of President Wilford Woodruff) on May 25, 1892, and one week later was sent on a mission in the southern Unites States.  Lucy joined him four months later, serving by his side in the mission office.  She died at age 68, after 45 years of marriage.  They had two daughters and one son.

President George Albert Smith was ordained an Apostle by President Joseph F. Smith on October 8, 1903, and was set apart as President of the Church on May 21, 1945.  He died on his 81st birthday, April 4, 1951.

At the age of 34, president Smith made a list of resolutions that he called his "personal creed."  They consisted of 11 ideals that he committed to live by:

"I would be a friend to the friendless and find joy in ministering to the needs of the poor.

"I would visit the sick and afflicted and inspire in them a desire for faith to be healed.

"I would teach the truth to the understanding and blessing of all mankind.

"I would seek out the erring one and try to win him back to a righteous and a happy life.

"I would not seek to force people to live up to my ideals but rather love them into doing the thing that is right.

"I would live with the masses and help to solve their problems that their earth life may be happy.

"I would avoid the publicity of high positions and discourage the flattery of thoughtless friends.

"I would not knowingly wound the feelings of any, not even one who may have wronged me but would seek to do him good and make him my friend.

"I would overcome the tendency to selfishness and jealousy and rejoice in the successes of all the children of my Heavenly Father.

"I would not be an enemy to any living soul.

"Knowing that the Redeemer of mankind has offered to the world the only plan that will fully develop us and make us really happy here and hereafter, I feel it not only a duty but also a blessed privilege to disseminate this truth."

President George Albert Smith lived during the buggy era, and died during the time when traveling by air was common.  He lived what he believed.  He stated that we must be obedient to gospel principles to qualify as Saints.  Having our names on Church roles was not sufficient.  He likened this truth to the parable of the wedding feast.  In order to be obedient we must read and study the scriptures, pray often, attend the temple, pay an honest tithe, obey the word of wisdom, have a spirit of forgiveness, and live gospel principles.

President George Albert Smith said, "He has given us intelligence and wisdom above our fellowmen.  A knowledge of pre-existence has been given to the Latter-day Saints; a knowledge that we are here because we kept our first estate, and that we have been given the opportunity of gaining eternal life in the presence of our Heavenly Father, by keeping our second estate.  We will not be judged as our brothers and sisters of the world are judged, but according to the greater opportunities placed in our keeping.  We will be among those who have received the word of the Lord, who have heard His sayings, and if we do them it will be to us eternal life, but if we fail condemnation will result.

Let us do better than we have ever done before.  Let us renew our determination to be real Latter-day Saints, and not just make-believe. ...I do not know anybody who can not do a little better than he has been doing, if he makes up his mind."

President George Albert Smith lived according to the 11 creeds to which he committed.  His life was one of service and kindness to all.
